The process started spring 2019 with a series of sessions and continued in August with a more intensive workshop period. Due to an unfortunate injury the performance part of the project has been postponed to ANTI – Contemporary Art Festival 2020.

Installation performance by Tania El Khoury in collaboration with Ziad Abu-Rish.

On a night with a sudden electricity outage in their Beirut neighbourhood, the artist and her historian husband discussed the history of power cuts in Lebanon. Born during the Lebanese Civil War (1975-1990), the artist had grown up with the understanding that the problem with electricity in Lebanon began during the war. The historian, however, recalled finding a government document dated 1952 that announced scheduled electricity outages across the city of Beirut. Read more ▸

Photographies and book preview

Gravitation marks a turn to a more intimate, direct approach in Haapoja’s practice. The series of c. 80 photographs are born from a personal urgency that bypasses discourse. Created at fast pace during a time of severe physical and emotional distress, the images reveal moments of desire, mortality, abandonment and agency, objectification and the desire to become an object. The exhibition presents selected prints from the series alongside a preview of the upcoming publication Gravitation (2017). Read more ▸

Kuopio Prison is placed near the city center. The prison accommodates 93 inmates; ordinary people whose lives and identities extend beyond the time of their sentencing. On the other side of the city there are high schools, from where young people graduate to become full members of a society in which imprisonment is a punishment for taking too many freedoms.

Participatory encounter for one participant at a time. Duration c. 2 hours.

As free subjects and legal persons we are capable of making contractual agreements with each other. A contract binds the participants to a reciprocal arrangement. A breach of contract results in legal action that is backed up by law. Many contracts give regulated access to a person’s body by the other party: surrogate mothers, sex workers or regular work contracts consist of mutual exchange that temporarily binds the other body to benefit the other.  Read more ▸

Cassils (CA / US) 2015

Heather Cassils, who won the first ever ANTI Festival International Prize for Live Art in 2014, will return to Kuopio.

Kuopio, Finland is located 210 kilometers from the Russian border. Cassils’ new site specific performance addresses the proximity of the ANTI Festival to a country where queer and trans lives are acutely vulnerable and under siege, lacking any protection under civil law. Read more ▸

In Hard Times, Cassils’s initial work using the figure of Tiresias, the artist performs wearing a prosthetic mask, a frosted blonde wig, and the deep bikini tan of a female bodybuilder. Read more ▸
