Terike Haapoja (FI): Studies on Freedom II

Wednesday 20.9. – Friday 22.9.
13:00 – 15:00 & 17:00 – 19:00

The Law Office Karvinen, Sarkkinen & Sallinen | Kuninkaankatu Street 22 A, 5th floor

Participatory encounter for one participant at a time. Duration c. 2 hours.

As free subjects and legal persons we are capable of making contractual agreements with each other. A contract binds the participants to a reciprocal arrangement. A breach of contract results in legal action that is backed up by law. Many contracts give regulated access to a person’s body by the other party: surrogate mothers, sex workers or regular work contracts consist of mutual exchange that temporarily binds the other body to benefit the other.

There can be freedom in giving away one’s freedom. What freedoms would I be willing
to give up to gain that freedom in exchange?

Studies on Freedom II consists of an interactive exchange between the audience members and the artists. The audience members and the artist negotiate a rental contract where one party gives their body for the other to use for a mutually agreed period of time. The conditions, limits and the duration of the contract is negotiated together at The Law Office of Karvinen, Sarkkinen & Sallinen. The final contract is signed by both parties and active immediately.

Terike Haapoja, the winner of ANTI Festival International Prize for Live Art 2016, returns to Kuopio with a series of new works!

Haapoja’s utopian societal institutions, such as Party of Others (2011–) or the collaboration with writer Laura Gustafsson, History of Others (2012 – ongoing), activate the world around them, bringing structures of exclusion and inclusion into light. In recent projects Haapoja has approached law as a performative space where reality is constructed.
