Kuopio’s identity is shaped by its striking, watery location but Minty Donald and Nick Millar are also interested in the functional and less spectacular water infrastructure of the city: the people, drainage systems and treatment plants that process Kuopio’s drinking, waste and run-off water. Watermeets investigates and re-imagines this often unnoticed, human-made infrastructure and its complex interconnections with the more celebrated ‘natural’ network of the region’s lakes and inlets.

Leading up to ANTI Festival, Minty and Nick will spend time with some of the people who work with Kuopio’s water treatment company, Kuopion Vesi. They will shadow them in their work and find out about their professional and personal relationships with water, identifying a significant moment in their daily inter-actions with water and an object associated with that moment. These objects will be cast in ice, as miniature ice models.

Participate!

Audience members attending Watermeets Kuopio will be invited to bring along a sample of water from their everyday routines in a specially supplied container.

They will be invited to join Minty, Nick and some of Kuopion Vesi workers on a watery journey through the city, culminating in a site-specific performance-installation at the Kuopion Vesi water plants where different waters, some in the form of small ice models, some brought by audience members, will melt, mingle and dissipate.

We offer a free tranportation to the Itkonniemi and Lehtoniemi plants.

Minty Donald & Nick Millar (UK)

Minty Donald and Nick Millar are artists based in Glasgow, Scotland. Minty works as a lecturer in contemporary performance at the University of Glasgow.

Minty and Nick’s collaborative practice is an attempt to investigate what it means to be ‘human’ in a world that they understand as much more-than-human. In their practice, they try to unsettle their human role in art-making processes through recognising the agency and liveliness of their other-than-human collaborators.  This often results in seemingly simple, playful and foolish actions, which acknowledge the limits and paradoxes of their attempts to be more-than-human.

For the past 6 years, their work has focused on inter-relationships between humans and water, and specifically, between humans and rivers or other watercourses such as canals and drainage systems. This has included performances and installations with watercourses in Scotland, Canada, Spain, Germany and Australia.
