Lenine Bourke, Verena Curr & Sue Loveday (CA): The Walking Neighbourhood

Finnish artists: Henna Hartikainen, Eerika Jalasaho.Would you be interested in taking a tour and seeing Kuopio from local children and teenagers’ perspective? In The Walking Neighbourhood the audience will be guided by youngsters aged between 10 and 17 on walking tours of a neighbourhood, community, place or space. The children will be in control of developing the artistic encounter, guiding the audience, navigating the space and sharing their experiences of autonomy while getting to know people that they have not met before. The walking tours offer adults an opportunity to rely on a child as a guide in places that are not normally accessible through a child’s range of experiences.

The project helps children to be seen and heard, to become active agents with their own voices. It promotes children’s involvement in society and community, and provides them with materials for building their identity. It aims to make the community more child-friendly.

Each tour will have its unique themes and destinations, and they vary with regard to the length and pace. The audience will take part in the tour as a group. Lenine Bourke (CA)

The Walking Neighbourhood was developed by Lenine Bourke prior and during her time as Director of Contact Inc with early support from Darren O’Donnell of Mammalian Diving Reflex. Lenine Bourke has an extensive professional experience in the arts and culture sector both in Australia and internationally, and she has led various organisations and projects. In her work she has focused on engaging and bringing together children and young people.

Join in to plan and guide your own walking tour!

In order to take part in the Walking Neighbourhood project children and teenagers will attend workshops for two weeks, where everyone can plan their own tour according to the theme they choose. Those who wish to become guides must be under 18 and willing to commit to attend the workshops.
