Artefact is a ceremony for obsolete technology.

It commemorates the mysterious phenomenon of brand disappearance from Blackberry, to Nokia. It is a tribute to the immortal consumer icons we have internationally adored and the intimate and fickle ways we worship them.

At this interdisciplinary event, we will farewell the products that have formed us with performance, sound, documentary and pathos. It will take place in Kuopio’s Puijo Church and from there we will move to a mysterious no-one’s land on the city’s outer edge to witness the burial of our own Artefact. This inter-generational work has been created with the community of Kuopio and features some of its best loved choirs, death metal singers and a living timeline of wild children to senior citizen. The city is invited to celebrate the relationships they have with their own magical artefacts.

Willoh S.Weiland is the winner of the ANTI Festival International Prize for Live Art 2015. Artefact is a new commissioned work for ANTI – Contemporary Art Festival and a co-production with the Australian Aphids Events. The project is supported by the Finnish Saastamoinen Foundation and the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body. Aphids is supported by the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria.

How to Get There?

Make sure that your location is Kuopio, Finland.

Artefact will take place in Kuopio's Puijo Church (Taivaanpankontie 3) and from there we will move to a mysterious no-one’s land on the city's outer edge to witness the burial of our own Artefact.

We recommend using the public transport, driving a car, cycling or walking to the Puijo Church. There are free parking lots right next to the venue as well as at the Puijonlaakso Mall (about 400 meters from the venue).

From the Puijo Church, we will walk together to the “Technopolis Park”. In case you come by car, the access to the Teknia parking area is via Savilahdentie Street 6.

Willoh S. Weiland (AU)

Willoh S. Weiland is an Australian artist, writer and curator and the Artistic Director of Aphids. Her recent trilogy of live works Forever Now, Void Love and Yelling at Stars (2008-2015) explores the relationship between art and infinity. Often working collaboratively with non-artists Weiland is interested in creating impossible propositions and fulfilling them. Since 2011, Aphids (with Artistic Associates Liz Dunn, Tristan Meecham, Lara Thoms, Martyn Coutts and Thea Baumman) has presented works at most major Australian venues and festivals. Weiland has also made work for the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, the Next Wave Festival, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney and the Centre for Contemporary Art in Glasgow.

JR Brennan (AU)

JR Brennan is an Australian director, performer, composer and producer. In recent years his practice has interrogated ideas of crime and virtue. His work is research led and often performed in site-specific locations. Currently he is producing a series of projects: The Chat, a performance created and performed by artists and ex-offenders at Arts House, Melbourne, The Virtues, a documentary music project in partnership with Białołęka Prison, Warsaw and The Mark Of Cain, a stage production first presented for the European Centre for Theatre Practices Gardzienice, Poland 2011. All three projects draw on the auto-ethnographic research collected and observed by Brennan in his role as a parole officer and work in experimental theatre in Australia and Europe.
