Lea & Pekka Kantonen (FI): Performance About Crafts
Manual skills and handicrafts often contain a lot of cultural information and performance-like qualities that may easily go unnoticed.In the Performance about crafts workshop this quiet and practical information – or the memory of it – turns into a performance. Participants of various ages and cultural backgrounds will produce performances and record them on video, bridging the gap between art and handicraft.
These performances will be premiered on Friday. Video installation lasts 25 minutes and it is shown 3 times. From Tuesday to Friday, Latari will also be the venue for an installation where audiences can make their own designs of carpets and other materials used during the festivities in old Finnish houses. Lea & Pekka Kantonen (FI)
Lea and Pekka Kantonen represent the first generation of performance, video, environmental and community arts in Finland. For more than 20 years they have worked with indigenous and small peoples in Mexico, Estonia and Lapland. This artist couple often develop many projects on the same theme at the same time; their practice includes field-work, teaching, research and political activism, with an emphasis on attentive interactivity with people and place. Their work, a video diary project called Kodin Väreilyä compiled over 23 years and received the AVEK award in 2011.
