Johanna MacDonald (CA/FI): Badly translated stand-up

As a Canadian living in Finland, Johanna MacDonald speaks, as she puts it, “weird Finnish – learnt lazily over the last eight years, full of half-conjugated verbs and random word endings”. Her pronounciation skills aren’t up to much either. Performing eight hours of live stand-up comedy in Finnish, translating jokes originally written in English, will be a challenge for Johanna. Offers of grammatical advice will be greatly appreciated.

Johanna MacDonald (CA/FI)

Currently finishing an MA in Performance Art and Theory at the Theatre Academy of Finland, Johanna has shown performance works across the country since moving to Finland from Canada in 2002.

“I was born in Vancouver, Canada in 1977, studied theatre in Toronto, and moved to Finland in 2002. Currently, I’m finishing an MA in Performance Art and Theory at the Theatre Academy of Finland, examining interruption and behavioural contracts in performance. My performances range from dance theatre to writing to roleplaying games, but I’m always interested in the use of time and the particular modes of behaviour we fall into when we take on the role of performer – or spectator.”
