Queer Brunches serve as a meeting place in Kuopio for anyone over the age of 18 who feels at home in queer spaces.
Queer Brunches is a queer space based in Northern Savo that combines a love of great breakfasts with sustainable values and a sense of community. Founded by Iiris Kekäle and Anniina Palokangas, the brunches serve as a meeting place in Kuopio for anyone over the age of 18 who feels at home in queer spaces. At the brunches, people enjoy food and each other’s company without anyone having to explain themselves, their way of being or even their identity.
At the heart of the brunches is the desire to create safer spaces where people are allowed simply to be and breathe, to meet others as their true selves and to feel that they belong. The brunches are organised in according with the principles of sustainable development, and the food is prepared mainly from surplus produce. The anti-capitalist ethos is reflected in the fact that togetherness, inclusion and a sense of community do not need to be built around consumption: what matters most is the space we create for one another, all together.
