Tomi Leppänen

Tomi Leppänen is a graphic designer and artist known for his minimalist yet playful approach that is characterised by its combination of contemporary art and visual culture. Leppänen’s work doesn’t aim to invent the unprecedented; rather, it reinterprets existing forms, ideas, and influences as modules to be recombined, revealing new perspectives and experiences. In 2023, Leppänen was awarded the title of The (Finnish) Graphic Designer of the Year.

Leppänen started working as a graphic designer for ANTI in 2008, and has developed ANTI’s visual identity together with the festival since.

ANTI Festival’s long-term graphic designer, artist Tomi Leppänen presents an installation and an accompanying typographic poster series, using the festival’s mission statement as a starting point.

(empty space) draws on a theory of performance art, according to which any empty space becomes a stage the moment a person steps into it and there is an audience. By giving a name to an anonymous public space, the work shifts the perspective from which it is viewed. This quietly participatory work is also a philosophical paradox: when the work is placed in an empty space, it is no longer empty.
