BURN
Over one day, from dawn to sunset, we will build a beacon on the island of Vasikkasaari. Assembled from deadwood found on the island itself and from gifts brought to the island by boat, the Bonfire will become an increasingly significant presence on the island. We invite the public to bring gifts for the fire. These may be of waste wood from different local tree species, straw, bones, or domestic objects (tables, chairs etc.) that have reached the end of their use. Each person who travels to the island may assist the artist in building the beacon and contribute to a ritual inventory of burnt offerings.
Beacons are intentionally conspicuous and in building this fire we will attempt to draw attention towards the island for the day, encouraging people to engage with the event and move towards it.
BURN will culminate in the lighting of the fire at 8.30pm. The fire will be visible from the harbour side.
To visit Simon on Vasikkasaari and take an offering for the fire please book your boat journey here: info@antifestival.com
Throughout the day offerings for the fire can be left at the harbour side (please see map) and will be taken on your behalf to the island.
Simon Whitehead works from his base in rural west Wales and internationally. He has developed a body of work from the pedestrian; encountering situations at walking pace his works are place sensitive and often involve a process of ritual reconstruction through the body, live performance, sound and sensory media. Whitehead’s work continues to embrace notions of plurality and the collaborative process with other artists, the public, place and animals.
